When should a patient consider using a soft liner in their RPD?

A soft liner is specifically indicated for patients who have sensitive or resorbed ridges. The main function of a soft liner is to provide cushioning and additional support to areas of the mouth where the underlying bone structure has been compromised or is sensitive. Resorption of the ridge can lead to sharp bony prominences that may irritate the tissue, causing discomfort during the use of a traditional RPD. The soft liner acts as a cushion, absorbing forces during chewing and preventing trauma to the sensitive tissues.

While better retention over time can be a benefit of using a soft liner, it is not the primary reason for selecting this option. Likewise, patients with healthy ridge structures typically do not need the cushioning effect of a soft liner, as their ridges can adequately support a conventional denture base. Waiting for a year of use is not standard practice; the decision to use a soft liner should be made based on the condition of the patient's oral tissues at the time of fitting the RPD, rather than on the duration of use.
